you don't have to add the apex first. if you only want chat.acme.com on wymzy and the apex points elsewhere (an old website, a marketing landing page), add just the subdomain.
type "chat.acme.com" into the connect dialog. heron knows it's a subdomain and asks for a single cname instead of an a record.
heron shows the value. add it at your registrar; leave the apex's existing records alone.

this is the one step that has to happen at the place you bought the domain. heron tells you exactly what to add; you copy + paste it into your registrar's dns panel.
once the dns records are in, come back to heron and let it check. if dns is right, the domain flips to active and you're live. if not, heron tells you exactly what's wrong.
